Reply with quote | #1 | I'm looking for someone to hook up with to do a cycling trip in 2006. The plan is to cycle from Mexico to Argentina. I'm getting on a bit (30 something), so take a fairly relaxed and easy going approach, but have a pretty good idea of what’s involved after doing a big overland motorbike trip a few years ago. You’re looking at maybe spending around £1000 on the bicycle, tent and other gear. The distance is going to be around 9,000 miles, 50-70 miles a day, which is easier than you might imagine and will take around 9 months. Spending will be under £15 a day, in some areas way under. Some of the trip includes taking the bikes on boats across the huge glacial lakes, up rivers in the Amazon and around the Darien Gap where the Panama Canal is.
You only need an average fitness level and can build up as you go. The main thing is just deciding to go for it, as after all, you only live once! If you or anyone you know if interested, please get in touch.
Also, any advice on the trip is very welcome.

I wish I were writing to say Yes, I would love to accompany you on your adventure, but I (who am also in my late 30s) will have to postpone my dream of cycling through Latin America until my three sons grow up. I do have a few suggestions. First, if you already know some Spanish, learn some more. The people are always the greatest part of any travel, and communication is essential. Next, there is an excellent web site, just type in bicycle trips in south america on yahoo.com and a wealth of stories await you. I wish you the best of luck. Perhaps in twenty years I will make my own path towards Ushuaia. Cheers, Sean |

Reply with quote | #3 | If you dont find anyone, go anyway you will meet others doing a simlar thing. Qiute a few south americans are in to cylce touring. Learn spanish and you will have many friends. Take a small piece of camo net to cover you and your kit up,so when you feel a bit of a eyesore you can disappear a bit or if found get mistaken for a soilder/spy. Use the best tyres you can afford and pump them up everyday. Travel comfy not light, its worth it at your age. |

When do you plan on starting? I've already began my trip form Southern Utah to Belize. I would like to talk more about your plan as I am open and able to extend my trip if it seems worth while. I'm in Bisbee, Az right now for a few days and will have regular access to internet and phone. So this would be a good time to discuss things. I plan on riding to NM and droping into Mexico throught Columbus next week. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Andy |

Hi. Did you manage your cycle trip (or has anyone rode from Mexico to Argentina)? A friend and I are considering this trip late 2008 into 2009. |
